Toilet paper is now in common use and absolutely cannot be missing from our bathroom but it has not always been this way!
It seems to have been invented by the Chinese for the Emperor's family but the date is uncertain, it consisted of very thin sheets of paper each measuring two feet by three. In the rest of the world, various materials were used, sometimes even very unusual ones... the farmers of the Middle Ages made small balls with hay, the crews of ships cut the ropes and wet them with sea water, in ancient Rome the nobles used wool soaked in rose water, the Vikings used sheep's wool, the Eskimos used snow with mud, in the 19th century instead the pages of old newspapers were used and so on... Then in 1857, Joseph Gayetty, a small entrepreneur from New Jersey patented and produced the first toilet paper, called "therapeutic paper", each sheet was soaked in aloe but unfortunately the product was not successful. Later in 1879 the Englishman Walter Alcock had the idea of producing the first toilet paper in rolls. The patent was purchased in 1896 by Irvin, Clarence and Arthur Scott (the future Scottex!!!) who had to contend for a long time with the reluctance of mass consumers who considered the product a vice for billionaires but above all because they found it inconvenient to buy such a product. Only after 1930 was toilet paper accepted by the American market while in Europe it spread after 1950. The Italians joined this small revolution of civilization in the economic boom, or in the second half of the twentieth century.
At the beginning it was presented as square or rectangular sheets of paper, then in 1891 the cardboard roll with the paper wrapped around it was patented, later pre-cut into many squares so as to reduce waste and make tearing easier. Later, multi-ply, white, colored and scented papers were produced.
Since the roll was patented, the toilet roll holder comes into play, absolutely essential for holding the roll (excuse the pun!!!).
On the market we can find this object in metal, wood, plastic, plexiglass, in many different shapes and colors. It consists of a rotating cylinder or a reel on which the roll is inserted, it can have a cover or simply a rod, it can be wall-mounted or integrated into the floor lamp.
•••• A little curiosity… Did you know that etiquette requires that the toilet paper placed in the roll holder has a precise orientation?
Considering a roll holder whose horizontal axis is parallel to the wall, the paper can hang from above and in front of the roll (over position), or below and behind it (under position).
The exact orientation is OVER!!!
You won't believe it but abroad the debate on the correct way to place toilet paper in the roll holder has generated sociological studies and debates on customs.
So be careful how you put the toilet paper roll in your holder!!!
See you next week for another story about the objects of common use in your bathroom!
